The political awakening of a sizable number of Americans, as illustrated by the growth of the Tea Party movement across the country over the last ten months and the million who marched on Washington last September, has led many people, myself included, to seriously explore the options available to us to do more than just express frustration with the political situation that exists – it has motivated many to start getting involved with the campaigns of candidates who articulate shared values, to engage with local issues and to work to achieve their goals through existing political parties. With that last in mind, I attended a Porter County, Indiana, Center Township Republican meeting Wednesday evening, December 9, 2009. The experience stands in marked contrast to my only other previous exposure to the workings of the Porter County Republican Party, an Executive Committee meeting held in October in Kouts.

Center Township GOP Meeting
October 25, 2009
On The Road To Nowhere
The Porter County GOP held a meeting at the American Legion Hall in Kouts, IN, on Thursday, October 22, 2009. In attendance were GOP board members, precinct committeemen and interested citizens. My rough estimate is between 60 and 70 people attending, of which at least a dozen were Northwest Indiana Patriots members. The meeting began with the now-familiar pre-emptive demand for civility, much like we experienced at the Democrat Alliance-MoveOn.org-sponsored Rep. Visclosky town hall meeting in Chesterton in August. Apparently it is now political etiquette to assume the people you invite to a meeting will behave like an angry mob, and NWIP was invited to attend by Republican Party members. They didn’t actually hold up a placard with the definition of astroturf on it, though.

The increase will bring the county funding for the agency to $250,000 next year.
