We’re All Journalists Now

This is a theme I’m kind of developing. Right now these are almost random thoughts. More to come, I hope.

Earlier this week, the Daily Caller blog brought to light an interesting story. It seems that members of a liberal listserv known as Journolist conspired to kill the story of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s racist rants during the 2008 Presidential campaign. You can read the full story here: http://dailycaller.com/2010/07/20/documents-show-media-plotting-to-kill-stories-about-rev-jeremiah-wright/.

For most people in the country, even those who lean to the left themselves, this really comes as no surprise. Except to the journalists themselves. Many apparently believe that their views are the only correct opinions and that anyone who disagrees is not only wrong, but evil.

Some, however, know exactly what they are producing – propaganda to further the cause of liberal progressivism. Once President Obama was elected, a good part of this group thought it was safe to come out of the closet. A famous example was Newsweek’s cover editorial in February 2009, We Are All Socialists Now. If you’ve forgotten, here’s a link: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tim-graham/2009/02/11/big-lie-newsweek-claims-cover-we-are-all-socialists-now

Main stream “news” these days consists of happenings of the day reported from the view of the left, polls taken by the news agencies themselves to back up what they already think, and puff-piece interviews that make the interviewee look good. Charlie Rangel was caught off guard when Luke Russert (son of the late Tim Russert) of NBC asked the hard-hitting questions. Rangle couldn’t believe it when Russert said he was from MSNBC. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s07eOyUeMFc

Enter the new media: internet, talk radio and cable TV. Mainstream journalists pooh pooh them, but the professionals and amateurs in these media do their homework and report what they find. You still have to read or listen with a critical mind-set, because here, too, there is bias. However, the bias is usually open; they tell you straight out which side they are on.

We have come full circle, back to the 18th century, when anyone with an opinion and access to a press could write news and commentary. And they weren’t worried about being objective, news and opinion were right out in the open. John Adams was accused in the news – not the editiorial section – of being a monarchist, wanting to put the new country back under the thumb of King George. Jefferson was accused of wanting to bring the French-style of revolution to America. (See this article: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/horseraceblog/2010/07/whats_so_bad_about_the_journol_1.html )

In my opinion, we all NEED to be journalists now. We can’t let the left put us back in the dark little box where only their ideas get in. We need a free and open media where ALL sides can express themselves and the listener can make up his or her own mind.

There can be no liberty without a free press. There can be no liberty without free debate. There can be no liberty without an educated and informed populace.

Do your homework. Don’t believe anyone just because of who they are or where they work. (Just because it’s on TV doesn’t mean it is automatically true.) Inform yourself and speak out!

A former labor organizer for the SEIU lays out a blueprint for stifling free speech in collusion with members of Congress:  Democrats Outline How To Disrupt Town Hall Meetings

The strategy from their agitator’s workbook(PDF):

Our targets are Members of Congress who must vote “yes” for this bill.  Our targets are not the right-wing extremists.  The targets of these attacks are Members of Congress.  Those members are also our targets.  We need to use these attacks as opportunities to work with the Members in ways that build our relationship in the field and bring us together as allies in health care reform.  Members may be more receptive to partnering with us if they know we will help them combat the opposition. White House Being Sued Over “Fishy” Emails

A press release from the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS):  White House Sued Over Free Speech Violations In Healthcare Battle: Doctor & Patient Groups Say White House Intended to Shut Up Opponents

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Office of the President and other White House officials are defendants in a free speech lawsuit filed by a prominent physician group, and a non-profit advocate for inner-city poor.

The White House has “unlawfully collected information on political speech,” thereby illegally using the power of the White House to chill opposition to its plans for health care reform, according to the complaint filed in District Court for the District of Columbia, by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) and the Coalition for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE)

The lawsuit was prompted by the White House solicitation for the public to report any “fishy” comments to ‘flag@whitehouse.gov.’ Although the White House slightly revised its data collection procedure last week, the email address still exists, the illegal activity continues, and is part of an “unlawful pattern and practice to collect and maintain information” on the exercise of free speech, which “continues in violation of the Privacy Act and First Amendment even if the Defendants terminate a particular information-collection component due to negative publicity.”

Confrontation is not just for citizens questioning government-run health care at town halls.  It can be used to facilitate a government takeover of what is broadcast on the radio.   From CNS News, Inspired by Saul Alinsky, FCC ‘Diversity’ Chief Calls for ‘Confrontational Movement’ to Give Public Broadcasting Dominant Role in Communications

Mark Lloyd, chief diversity officer of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), called for a “confrontational movement” to combat what he claimed was control of the media by international corporations and to re-establish the regulatory power of government through robust public broadcasting and a more powerful FCC. Media Notices Grassroots Nature of Town Hall Protests

Filed under: Getting The Message Out — Tags: , , , , — Northwest Indiana Patriots @ 11:39 am

From MSNBC, Loose network drives health reform opposition

The rowdy protests that threaten President Obama’s health-care reform efforts have been spurred on by a loose network of activists — from veteran advocacy groups with millions of dollars in funding to casual alliances of like-minded conservatives unhappy over issues from taxes to deficits to environmental laws.

Most of the groups helping to organize protests view the proposed health-care overhaul as just one part of a broader assault by government on free markets and individual liberty, their leaders say. Conservatives portray the movement as largely organic, fueled by average citizens alarmed at the direction the country has taken since Obama moved into the White House.

From Participatory Democracy To Un-American Activities

Filed under: Getting The Message Out — Tags: , , , , , , , — Northwest Indiana Patriots @ 3:32 pm

The First Amendment:  Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

How did things come to such a pass that the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States feels comfortable calling people exercising their rights to free speech and assembly guaranteed by the First Amendment “Un-American?”

How It Started

–The unprecedented bailout and federal takeover of the financial sector

–The unprecedented bailout and federal takeover of automakers

–The rushed passage of the $787 billion stimulus bill

–The stealthy passage of cap and trade in the House during a late Friday night session, just after the addition of 300+ pages to the bill

–Proposed health care reform legislation that will nationalize 1/6th of the economy

–National debt over $11 trillion

These and other events in Washington led to the formation of the Tea Party Movement, a spontaneous gathering of people who have similar views about the massive expansion of federal government, the rapidly-increasing debt, and a sense that elected representatives are disconnected from ordinary voters.  That’s how Northwest Indiana Patriots came into being.

Before organizations like Tea Parties and NWIP were formed, many people would write, email, fax and call their representatives with their views.  They would sign petitions, and urge their families, friends and neighbors to do the same. They would write letters to their local newspapers, and call in to local radio talk shows. But mostly, people would complain to each other and shake their heads over the direction in which they saw their country going, feeling helpless to change it.

The Tea Party Movement changed all that.  (more…)
